Learning to jog

During my last 2 evening walks I've added in some jogging. I've never jogged. Ever. At least not very far anyway. It hurt my knees too much. But then I was informed that this is because I don't have very much arch on my foot and my new shoes with arch support would help. So I'm going to test this theory. I found a "learn to jog" plan and I'm going to give it a shot. By the end of 8 weeks I should supposedly be able to jog 2 miles without stopping. So for my first week I'm supposed to do 4-5 intervals of walk 5 minutes, jog 30 seconds. This may sound like jack diddly squat to some of you, but let me tell you how hard 30 seconds is!!!

I also realized yesterday that I have this HUGE pride issue. I started one of my jogging intervals just after I'd turned onto a side street and I saw 2 people walking toward me. They were more than 30 seconds from passing me, so rather than stopping when my 30 seconds were up and look like a wimp...you got it, I kept going. I had to go for 1 minute and 11 seconds before they were out of sight. I was very, very tired and breathing like I'd just run a marathon. So maybe I'll just put the pride aside and stick to the plan. Eventually I won't be stopping. Just got to get there first. Slowly.

Congrats on losing another lbs - way to go! Jogging is hard on my knees too and I have a beautiful arch. I wish you luck on the jogging thing you're wonderful for even trying - I don't even try.

I understand the pride thing -- I do it, too!!! I always have. Sheesh, I do that with so many things. With some things it's the opposite. If "they" see me doing whatever (even if it's photography sometimes!) I will stop whatever I'm doing till they are past. We must get over this, eh, Erin? :) Congrats for attempting this! I have always been a short-distance runner so anything long distance, even a mile, is a looooong stretch for moi! :)

LOL. I couldn't help but laugh. It is funny. Don't go hurting yourself. You do have to walk before you can run.
Pride can really get in our way, can't it?

Too funny Erin! I know I have been guilty of that too...just plain silly eh? as if those other people really care how much we are or aren't running.....LOL!
Have a great day!

Louise, you mean those people don't care if we stop??? No one told me this, either! lol

I am glad you admitted this, Erin. I do it, too. But, then in front of the next group of people I am huffin' and puffin' and all red-faced... it ain't a pretty sight!

Where did you find that plan? I think I can run for 30 seconds at a time!!

Cherrye, I've linked to the jogging plan in my post now. It's very cool. It makes it a little less intimidating.

erin, i have the opposite jogging/pride problem...when i have jogged (in the distant past) i would STOP as soon as i saw people coming toward me (ESPECIALLY if it was people i knew)....or i would jog really late at night when the streets were emptier.

way to go! you're an inspiration.

EVERYONE does it. Just a weird, quirky human thing, I think. Stupid pride. Even though I know that everyone does it, I will continue to do it. And so will they :)

Congrats. 30 seconds can feel like forever. But you'll feel so good about yourself when those 30 seconds start to feel like nothing.

Baby steps, dahling :)

Hey Erin,

I tried it yesterday (before I found your link). That is HARD! I did it 3 times, then I thought, "Well, maybe I should wait and read the "real" instructions."

No excuses today, heh?

I tried a plan similar to this last summer. If you stick with it, I think you will be pleased with the results!
It is so funny that you wrote about jogging for 30 seconds in front of the other couple. I had so many experiences just like that. I felt so embarrassed at first.
Keep it up!!!!
