A Recipe for Fun : )

Jer and I got to go out on a date tonight. How refreshing it was! We went to see the movie Ratatouille which I must say was so fun. If you can get over the fact that they are RATS, it's very cute...a little disgusting thinking about rats in a kitchen, but cute. I think the best part of seeing the movie was that it got Jer all fired up about cooking. Oh, that is a GOOD thing! Anyone who wants to get fired up about cooking is more than welcome in my kitchen. I love cooking, but I don't always like cooking alone or thinking up WHAT to cook. A little input goes a long way. I'm sure some or all of you can relate.

So I put in my two cents. Since I love to cook and try new things, and he wants to cook, but in a fun way, why don't WE set aside a night each week and try out a new recipe (an old one's fine, too). After the girls are in bed we can prepare and eat a nice meal together. Kind of like a date, but in our own kitchen. Make it fun. Spend time together. It actually got him all excited and off to Chapters we went to find a new cookbook that we could use. We spent half an hour browsing through many, many different cookbooks. All very nice, lots with pretty, shiny pictures, some with recipes we couldn't pronounce or wouldn't eat. We didn't have enough time to make a decision, so we'll get back to that another time. In the meantime, we can use the cookbooks we have and the internet to start our new tradition. I said we should get the chef's hats to make it even more fun : ) I don't think he'd be opposed to it (he even talked about an apron, lol). So, I'll let you know how it goes. Maybe I'll have to start a weekly post about what we're cooking and how it turned out, pictures and all. Are there any cookbooks that you guys find amazing, ones that you use lots of the recipes? Let me know.

Have a happy weekend.

Hey girl, my kids want to go see that movie. It's funny you said you needed to get over the fact that it was a rat. When I saw a trailer for that movie of the rat running through the kitchen, all I could say was "gross!" Jacqueline told me I was missing the point of the movie, she said "your supposed to feel sorry for the rat, not be grossed out by it!" So I plan to go see it, but I'm not to sure how I'll feel about it.

Have fun cooking!

Oh, one rat is okay, you can get over it. It's when there's a whole COLONY of rats that it kind of makes you shudder. Go see it. It's worth it.

I promised Hannah I'd take her to see that movie once it comes to our little cinema up here. I can hardly wait!!

That's an awesome idea, having an 'after hours' kitchen date! I highly recommend www.Recipezaar.com. Since discovering it and buying a membership last summer, I haven't even WANTED to buy another cookbook -- which is shocking, considering how much of an addiction that used to be! You can even search for recipes by specific ingredients if there's a few little containers of leftovers in the fridge!! Another thing I really like about it is that I know a few of the chefs that have reviewed and posted recipes and so I trust their opinions and tastes. I could go on and on about what I love about it. Just check it out. I highly recommend it.

My first thought, uh, foreplay...
Like they say, sex starts in the kitchen!

Anyway, it was a great movie!!Katey just saw the chef hat on your blog and said, "Mommy, Ratatouille!!!"

What a great idea. Your fortunate that Jer is adventurous in the food department. There are so many foods I'd like to try but my family doesn't venture too far from the usual fare.

Don't you love cooking together with someone elts... For some reason it doesn't seem to be such a big job when your cooking together.
You have a great thing going, don't give it up.

erin! i hope my comment sticks today. i've been having problems posting a comments....arg...computers!!

i wanted to say that i read about a couple doing suff like this in my MP magazine. it was a really neat idea...what they called it was "cafe _____ night" (you insert your last name in the blank) and then the husband or wife would take turns. one would put the kids to bed and the other would prepare and plan a special meal. candles...ambiance....the whole schtick!

it sounded very fun...and economical especially in the toddler years.....

happy cooking mon amie!! love your idea.

I think this is a great idea for you two to do. What fun. I don't have any cookbooks to suggest but why don't you try "make it up" night. My husband and I love to make up new receipes...we try putting things together that sound good and see what happens. Have fun.

I love that idea!!

I still have not seen the movie but would love to. I don't usually watch kiddie movies, but this one looks so darn cute and I think to take Noah would be super fun --- we've never taken him before!
